Netflix Customer Loss Worse Than Forecast

Couple of lessons should be learned from Netflix.

1. Keep the subscription price less than $10.

2. Don't change the price if you are offering something less than $10.

I noticed the price change only via Mint when it altered me that something is over the budget. That put the question on my mind whether I need Netflix. I still have Netflix only streaming. Most likely I'll keep the streaming.

Couple of years ago, few of my friends rolled out Scrum at our software development project. The managers loved burn down charts. One of the business analysts came to my office after his weekly 1:1 with his manager.

He said “my boss uses burn down chart to yell us at now”. I asked him what burn down chat. He said the individual burn down chart. I asked him “what was he doing before the Scrum?” He said “he yelled at us by looking at Gantt chart”.

It is not about what process/methodology you use to measure the productivity. It is about what you do with the data. You can yell with your direct reports to de-motivate them or you can use the data to coach your team to ship the product early.

It is up to you what do you do with those charts.

Couple of years ago, I canceled my MSJ->MSDN magazine subscripton even stop reading online. Joel explains in his essay, WHY?.

The other camp is what I'm going to call the MSDN Magazine camp, which I will name after the developer's magazine full of exciting articles about all the different ways you can shoot yourself in the foot by using esoteric combinations of Microsoft products in your own software. The MSDN Magazine Camp is always trying to convince you to use new and complicated external technology like COM+, MSMQ, MSDE, Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer and its components, MSXML, DirectX (the very latest version, please), Windows Media Player, and Sharepoint... Sharepoint! which nobody has; a veritable panoply of external dependencies each one of which is going to be a huge headache when you ship your application to a paying customer and it doesn't work right. The technical name for this is DLL Hell. It works here: why doesn't it work there?

This is my exact opinion about Patents. (copied from this discussion)

I agree that patents are neccesary, but there was publicity a while ago about the microsoft word-processing-documents-stored-as-xml patent. Let's compare two possible patents:

A machine that can lift and support more than 50 people, 1000 metres above the ground and with no contact with the ground.

A computer program that arranges it's data storage in terms of elements and children of elements.

Is it really right that the same level of protection should be offered to both? Patent's are about inventions. The first would definitely qualify - the Wright brothers creation of the aeroplane is inarguably a case of invention. In the second case, though, is it really invention? I think it's not, and for the prospect of considering it an invention to even be countenanced is absurd, and so I cannot believe the patent system to be anything more than a farce.

If you want to claim that it's about innovation rather than invention, you're welcome to. I'll just note here that, roughly, innovation + creation = invention. Looking at one side rather than the other doesn't make a difference to this argument.
